The Who: Rock Band

The Who: Rock Band

Persistant rumors claim the legendary The Who band are going to be the next to recieve their own branded Rock Band game, following The Beatles who made history on Rock Band, and other bands who recieved their own game in Guitar Hero like Aerosmith and Metallica .

Singer Roger Daltrey let the following tidbit slip in an interview with MassLive:

“The game, yeah, yeah, they’re going to be doing a Who one next year. There is one planned. [The idea] is fabulous. Anything that gets non-musical people interested in music is wonderful.”

It seems like Harmonix are working closely with the band to finzlize the details. A Rock Band spokesman spoke to Kotaku lately saying:

“We’re working closely with the Who on what’s next, but don’t have anything new to announce at this time.”

The Who choice of Rock Band over Guitar Hero was probably effected by the recent launch of The Beatles: Rock Band who kept the true signature of the Fab Four over the game. The Who already launch few of their song on different Rock Band games like “Won’t Get Fooled Again,” RB2 had “Pinball Wizard” and July 2008 saw the The Best of the Who bring a dozen of the band’s hits to Rock Band as downloadable content.

It seems like the 2009 Beatlemania has nothing to do with the one broke out in the 60’s.
Although heavily marketed with millions spent on developing the game and on advertising, The Beatles: Rock Band is not selling as good as analysists predicted few months ago.
The game sold only 583,000 in his first month, down 40% from the expected volume (Analysts predicted it will sell more than 1,000,000 units in the first month).
However, TB:RB beat it’s chief competition, Guitar Hero 5″ by nearly a 2:1 margin in September.

The most popular game sold was The Beatles Rock Band For xBox, selling 254,000 units. The nintendo Wii version sold 208,600 copies with the PS3 landing in 3rd place, selling nearly 121,000 copies.

MTV Games, who developed the game with their sister company Harmonix, say they are anything but disappointed and that The Beatles Rock Band is selling the expected number of units, according to internal expectations.
The less than stellar performance of “The Beatles: Rock Band” is tied, in part, to the ongoing woes of the music/dance genre. While September showed a 72 percent dollar sales increase over the 2008 numbers, the category as a whole is still down markedly year-over-year.

However, sales are expected to grow during the holiday season.

Bono and Adam Clayton of U2

Bono and Adam Clayton of U2

U2 want to follow in the footsteps of their idols The Beatles and release a ‘Rock Band’ video game.
According to NME, Bass player Adam Clayton has revealed he and his bandmates had talks with the makers of the popular video game series last year but initial discussions broke down.

He said: “We definitely would like to be in there. But we felt some of the compromises weren’t what we wanted. That could change.
“I love the idea that’s where people are getting music and we’d love to be in that world. We’ll figure something out.”

The Beatles Rock Band game definately changed the way rock bands are looking on the ever growing video game market as a platform to increase their visibility and popularity. With over 1,000,000 units of The Beatles Rock Band already sold, it make sense that U2 and other rock bands would like to join the party.
Clayton added:”What The Beatles have done, where the animation is much more representative of them, is what we’re interested in, rather than the one-size-fits-all animation. We didn’t want to be caricatured.”

Katy Perry

Katy Perry

Multi-platinum international star, Katy Perry, is set to host the 2009 MTV Europe Music Awards (EMAs), the news was revealed today by MTV Networks International (MTVNI), owned by Viacom. The only artist ever to be asked to host two successive shows in the 15 year history of the MTV Europe Music Awards, Katy will bring her trademark energy and enthusiasm to the stage as the event broadcasts live on MTV from the O2 World, Berlin on Thursday 5 November at 9pm CET.

The 2009 EMAs are sponsored by Sony Ericsson, MTV Games / Harmonix The Beatles: Rock Band and Dell.

Fresh from her highly successful 2008 MTV Europe Music Awards debut, which not only saw her open the show astride a giant cherry Chapstick, and win the Best New Act category, but also catapulted her into the stratosphere as a truly global music artist, Katy is set to return bigger and even better at the upcoming Awards, which will reach more than 502 million MTV homes in Europe and around the world. In addition, this year, Katy will be going head-to-head with Beyonce, Lady GaGa, Shakira and Leona Lewis as she is nominated for Best Video for her smash track ?Waking Up in Vegas?.

Commented Bruce Gillmer, Co-Executive Producer & SVP, Talent & Music, MTV Networks International: ?We spend a lot of time and energy carefully considering our potential EMA host. It?s no mean feat to take the central role at a music event of the scale and heritage of the EMAs, but Katy did an outstanding job in Liverpool ? and we just kept coming back to her as first choice for this year. Katy?s deep connection to the world of music, her dynamic and compelling personality and her worldwide appeal made her a natural choice.?

Katy rose to fame in 2008 with her breakthrough album, ?One of the Boys? and Grammy nominated first single, ?I Kissed A Girl? which spent seven weeks at #1 on the Billboard Hot 100. Throughout the remainder of last year, the track became a worldwide smash hit in more than 30 countries and was followed by two more #1?s with ?Hot N Cold? and ?Waking Up in Vegas?. ?One Of The Boys? has sold a combined 4.8 million albums worldwide.

Katy will be joined on the 2009 EMA stage by performers Green Day, Leona Lewis and Tokio Hotel with more performers and presenters still to be announced. Leading EMA 2009 nominees include Lady GaGa and Kings of Leon, with 5 nominations apiece.

The 2009 MTV Europe Music Awards is one of the world?s most prestigious live music events. In 2008, the EMAs generated more than 4 million unique visitors to www.mtvema.com and over 100 million online votes.

Antonio Campo Dall?Orto is EVP, Music Brands, MTV Networks International and Executive Producer for the MTV Europe Music Awards. Executive Producer for Playmaker is Jane Fraser.
